The White House is “discussing a range of options” to acquire Greenland, Press Secretary Karolyn Levitt announced today. I joined CNN’s Richard Quest to discuss the implications for NATO.
My main points:
Don’t dismiss the possibility that Trump is serious. He is.
It would be relatively easy for the United States to take control of Greenland and declare it part of the United States.
The argument that the only way the United States can be secure is by owning Greenland is an argument against alliances and NATO. As a member of NATO, Greenland should be viewed as secure by the commitment of all members to come to its defense if it were attacked. That commitment is now very much in question.
