Can Europe defend itself? And, if so, how? That is the question Andrea Taylor-Kendall and Jim Townsend asked Barry Posen, professor of international relations at MIT, and me on their weekly podcast, Brussels Sprouts.
Barry and I come from different perspectives. Even so, there was a lot we agreed upon in our conversation. But we differed as well. Barry has long argued that Europe should be responsible for defending itself and the US should pursue a much more stand-offish policy. While he differs with the current administration in wanting to make this transition cooperatively, the end-goal is pretty much the same. I disagree. I believe that America’s security is crucially tied — and greatly enhanced — by Europe’s security and the US will be more secure, more prosperous, and more free if it plays an active role in the defense of Europe.
What do you think?
