Fine piece, Ivo, but it makes no mention of US military presumptions, assumptions, experiences, and failures/disappointments. This is Shock and Awe Redux, and someone needs to discuss it at length. Who said what to whom throughout the US security community, especially within DoD and between DoD and the White House? What are we loking at here: another example of failure of strategic bombing (repeating the lesson of WWII stratbombing survey)? Intel failure? Political suppression of competent mil/intel analysis? This must not go unexamined, especially given the loss of US military lives and the massive losses of US military equipment plus the revelations of supply chain inadequacies. RAK

Interesting you should make this point. My Politico Europe column out tomorrow addresses it head-on. I will repost it on Substack. Keep an eye out for it

Ivo, indeed a very useful article, which, I hope, will help energize a much wider discussion of these issues. But somebody still needs to work on the military and the security community themselves. This distortion of thinking didn’t happen in a vacuum. Where, when and how did it come to prevail, both within the military and in the broader policy/intellectual community. IMHO you can’t develop all this without having look again at the “military-industrial complex;”

Good that you pointed out one of the real problems with Iran's capability to develop nuclear weapons. Even if all enriched uranium goes away they still have the science and knowledge to recreate their nuclear program. I would like the news outlets to make this point which I believe most Americans have not been clued into.

For the Iranian society, the war has been an unmitigated disaster. Driven by desperation and false promises from the Trump administration, the Iranian people revolted, only to be met by a massacre of historical proportions. Then, thousands lost their life in the US-Israel bombing campaign, a campaign which destroyed vital infrastructure and economic assets. And finally, despite the early decapitation of its leadership, the brutal and oppressive regime not only survived, but it gained a new lease on life. For the Iranian people, there might be some sanctions relief, but the prospect of the continuation of the Islamic republic, its corruption and its brutality is indeed grim.

Americans have allowed the dumbest of us to reign supreme. Stupid: It's what's for breakfast!
